In the late autumn of 1944, I was brought from Sered' to Birkenau. Immediately upon arrival, we were tattooed with a number by means of a sharpened wooden stick, after which the skin was painted over with black colour. A red sign was painted on our back, and the Star of David was sewn onto our clothes.
